INSTITUTE OF
Robotics and Automation (IRAB)
OVERVIEW

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) empowers machines in industries with cognitive skills to perform their assigned operations with minimum human interaction. The revolutionary technology behind the success of this transformation from human-centric operation to automation is robotics. It involves fundamentals of electrical, mechanical, and computer engineering and requires knowledge from interdisciplinary subjects. It can enhance the overall productivity and product-quality of an industry provided workers can update themselves with new skills. Moreover, in hazardous environments and for repetitive works and high precision tasks (miniature and micro components), robots can contribute more. The effects of robotics can be realized in many areas, such as healthcare, agriculture, logistics, construction industry, government, autonomous vehicles, space, underwater, aerial services, disaster management, and social services. The speed, breadth, and depth of this 4IR are forcing each country to rethink how quickly robotics can be effectively utilized to change traditional ways of human engagement to achieve sustainable development. Robotics research has been receiving priority by most of the countries all over the world. Because of its necessity of having multidisciplinary expertise, in most of the cases, postgraduate programs are found in the areas of robotics.

Considering the growing demand of robotics, a proposal was submitted from BUET in 2015 to the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh for establishing a center of excellence for robotics and automation. The Hightech Park Authority of ICT Division sanctioned funds in 2016 for establishing BUET Robotics Center. BUET authority has allocated 440.53 sqm floor space on the East side of the 10th floor of ECE Building for establishing the center. Later a proposal for establishing the Institute of Robotics and Automation, BUET (IRAB) was accepted by the Academic Council in its meeting no. 480 dated 25/05/2022. Finally, the 530th meeting of the BUET Syndicate in its meeting held on 29th July 2022 approved and later in meeting dated 28th August 2022 confirmed the proposal for establishing the Institute of Robotics and Automation, BUET (IRAB). The institute will give major emphasis to enhance the capability of handling the technology challenges involved in 4IR through local capacity building with necessary skills and to conduct innovative research and development (R&D) for leading every aspect of the industrial revolution.
